Cyberpunk 2077 sold more than 13 million copies, even after refunds
CD Projekt Red may not be struggling as much as many may think given the public outcry after the release of Cyberpunk 2077. Despite offering refunds to players upset with how Cyberpunk 2077 runs, the studio is still breaking records for game sales. Cyberpunk 2077 is already the fastest-selling PC game of all time, with more than 4.72 million copies sold. After several weeks since the game’s release, CD Projekt Red is releasing how many copies Cyberpunk 2077 has sold.
Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad revealed that since the game’s release, it sold more than 13 million units. The 13 million units take into account the estimated number of retail sales on all platforms, both digital and physical. It also has been adjusted for Cyberpunk 2077 refunds, across all storefronts.
The management board at CD Projekt Red chose to release this information to help assure investors that Cyberpunk 2077 is a success. “Essentially the disclosure was made to reassure investors that the game still had a record breaking launch despite the controversy,” explains Ahmad in a tweet. “13m sell through in one week still makes this one of the largest premium game launches ever.”
A record breaking release despite Cyberpunk 2077 refunds
Earlier this month CD Projekt Red revealed it sold more than 8 million preorders for Cyberpunk 2077. Almost 75% of those preorders were for digital copies of the game. Players are fairly split on how they’re playing Cyberpunk 2077. Fifty-nine percent of the pre-orders were on PC, while the remaining 41% were for console. The breakdown of what generation of consoles sold is not available.
Since Cyberpunk 2077’s release, multiple reports of turmoil within CD Projekt Red have come to light. Developers who have worked on the game are questioning leadership within the company. The impact Cyberpunk 2077 will have on the gaming industry not only as one of the biggest titles in history but on how industry practices need to change will be clearer as more developers reveal what it is like working on the game.
