Machine Oil Mobil Super Sponsors League of Legends Pro League

Chinese esports company TJ Sports announced on Tuesday that the company has signed a sponsorship deal with Exxon Mobil Corporation’s machine oil brand Mobil Super for the League of Legends Pro League (LPL).

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Recently, the LPL Spring Split completed its regular season and Mobil Super joins the LPL sponsorship list between the regular season and playoffs. Mobil Super should be the 17th brand on the LPL partnership list, as one of the official partners. The relationship between LPL exclusive apparel sponsor Nike and LPL, however, is in peril after Nike and other Western clothing companies were hit with boycotts in China after they released “statements of concern” about Xinjiang labor practices. 

At the time of writing, LPL has removed the Nike logo from the poster and banner of the LPL sponsorship list. During the LPL broadcast, Nike’s swoosh was also covered up on team jerseys and shoes. It’s still not clear how LPL and Nike will handle the sponsorship.

It is also not the first time that a machine oil brand has shown interest in esports. In 2019, Shell signed a partnership deal with Riot Games for League of Legends European Championship (LEC). Apart from League of Legends, in February, British Petroleum’s Castrol also signed a sponsorship deal with Tencent for China’s top Honor of Kings competition, King Pro League (KPL).
