Multiópticas Creates Fake Esports Organization With Spanish Politician to Raise Awareness on ‘Screen Pollution’ – The Esports Observer
This week the news that the 72-years-old Spanish politician Celia Villalobos was founding her own esports organization excited and baffled the esports world, but it turns out that the “foundation” of the team Screen Wolves was actually a viral marketing campaign by the eyewear brand Multiópticas to raise awareness on an issue it calls “screen pollution.”
Multiópticas is now making available content on the Screen Wolves website regarding how people, in general, are spending much more time looking into screens and how it can be harmful for the eyes. In its main graphic piece at the website, it reads “because gaming does not remark years, the hours on the screen do. For responsible use of screens.”
The brand then shows its products, which uses the image of Villalobos to communicate that both the “screen intoxication” and its products can fit people of many different ages. The choice of Villalobos as a promoter is likely due to the fact that she went viral when spotted playing Candy Crush during an official session of Congress in 2015 when she was a congresswoman.
As one accesses the Screen Wolves website, a message makes it clear that “this team does not exist.” The Esports Observer reached out to Villalobos and Multiópticas several times but did not receive a response from either as of this writing.
