How to save big on Hearthstone booster packs
Keeping up with Hearthstone can get expensive, but you can save as much as 25 percent off the sticker price of Hearthstone cards by using either iTunes credit or Amazon Coins.
It all comes down to which client you’re using, and where you buy your virtual currency. Here’s how to take advantage of the best deals.
Don’t buy through the PC client
Blizzard sells Hearthstone cards directly through its PC client, and you can pay for them using either your credit card or Battle.net Balance. But there are better deals out there, unless you have an amazing Auction House hustle in World of Warcraft, where you can sell in-game gold for Battle.net Balance.
The best bargain available in the PC client is a 60-pack bundle for $69.99.This is not available on any of the app versions of the game, and is nine cents cheaper per pack than buying 40 packs for $49.99.
Let’s do better.
Saving money with discounted iTunes credit
If you play Hearthstone on an iPhone or iPad or, if you play on PC, but own an iOS device, you can save up to 20 percent using discounted iTunes credit. You just have to plan ahead.
The best time to buy iTunes credit is during the Christmas shopping season. Stores like Costco and Best Buy often sell $100 gift cards for $80 — a discount of 20 percent — as holiday doorbusters. If you can spare the cash and you plan to buy a lot of Hearthstone cards during the year, you can stock up for the best savings.
If you don’t want to plan that far ahead, you can frequently find sales offering 10 to 15 percent off iTunes credit throughout the year from various retailers, including Costco, Sam’s Club, Amazon, and PayPal’s eBay gift card store. This deal seems to pop up somewhere around once a month, and The iTunes Card Deals Twitter feed keeps track of the available discounts.
The sale might not be running precisely when a Hearthstone expansion launches, so you’ll want to start keeping an eye out for a discount on credit a few weeks before the expansion launch. Blizzard releases Hearthstone expansions three times each year, in April, August, and December.
Amazon Coins are usually the best deal
Amazon has its own app currency, Amazon Coins, which are often the cheapest way to get Hearthstone cards. But they can be a little tricky to use.
You can only buy Hearthstone cards with Amazon Coins through a version of the Hearthstone app that you download through the Amazon app store on an Android device. You can’t use the virtual currency through any other version of the client.
The Amazon store isn’t available at all on iOS, and the Coins are not a payment option in the version of the app that you can download from Google Play. So make sure you have the right version of the game before you buy your Amazon Coins; you can always uninstall the version of the game you got from Google Play and re-install it through Amazon’s app store if you need to. It should ask you to log into your Amazon account to pay for cards in the shop.
There are other limitations as well. Amazon Coins are not the same as Amazon gift cards or Amazon account credits, and can only be used on apps downloaded through Amazon’s App Store. You cannot use this currency to purchase other products sold on Amazon.
You can only buy Amazon Coins on Amazon, and the price fluctuates without notice. The best deal is usually getting 25 percent off by buying $500 worth of coins for $375, but if you don’t want to spend that much at once, you can often get the $100 card for at least a few dollars cheaper than most regular deals on $100 worth of iTunes credit. The best deal, as of this writing, is $500 worth of coins for $400, a 20 percent savings.
Amazon
I bought $100 in coins for $76 in March 2018 to get ready for the Witchwood expansion launch, and they were as low as $79 in July 2018 when Boomsday launched, but I have not seen them below $80 since then. I bought a $100 card for $81 to pre-purchase the Rise of Shadows bundle in mid-March.
Both of these approaches can save you a significant amount of money if you’re a Hearthstone enthusiast, however. So take your time, plan ahead, and get the best deals possible.
