21 Borderlands 3 gameplay details you may have missed from the trailers and Twitch Streams
-
Vault Hunters can now powerslide when running and using the crouch button. This has a similar, weighty feel to the slide used in Apex Legends, and takes into account your terrain (you’ll travel further downhill).
-
This goes hand in hand with the new mantle ability, allowing you can climb ledges and reach higher ground in a way that feels more dynamic. As a result, Borderlands 3 feels even speedier and more frenetic.
-
There’s a Quick Change Station where you can modify the appearance of your Vault Hunter with different heads, skins, colour palettes, emotes, and ECHO skins. You can also respec your skills here.
-
More character cosmetic options will be available to download in future though Gearbox has promised there will be no microtransactions in Borderlands 3.
-
Some weapons have two weapon modes you can seamlessly switch between, creating even more tactical options than ever before.
-
Your surroundings will often come into play with some limited destructibility. Some cover points can be destroyed and there are plenty of barrels and other environmental hazards.
- The aerial ground pound ability from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is back.
-
NPCs will come to your aid and revive you when you’re down. You can also help them get back on their feet, and back in the fight.
-
Each of the four playable Vault Hunters has three action skills to choose from, based on their unique personalities and combat roles.
-
Zane, The Operator, can opt to take a second action skill though this will occupy his grenade slot.
-
As in past Borderlands games, you can spend points on the skill tree to unlock an assortment of passive bonuses, helping you to create a specific playstyle.
-
Augments can also be unlocked. These will modify the effects of your action skill such as adding electric damage to Amara’s Phaseslam.
-
You can quickly heal up and fully replenish your health at vending machines with a simple button press.
-
Loot instancing generates unique profiles for each piece of loot dropped. So, two different players looking at the same weapon will see two different stat breakdowns, suited to their own experience level.
-
Level balancing allows friends of any skill level to play together in Borderlands 3. This option, like loot instancing, can also be switched off for those wanting that classic Borderlands experience.
-
There are a number of legendary, limited use Tediore weapons that trigger special effects such as turning into a grenade, shooting rockets, or becoming a cute little gun with legs.
-
Speaking of guns, the Children of the Vault (CoV) have their own weapon brand that use an overheating mechanics instead of reloading. The CoV gun we saw spews out soundwaves.
-
You now have a spaceship, the Sanctuary III, that can transport you between planets while also acting as your base of operations.
-
Aboard the Sanctuary III you can customise your living quarters to display favourite weapons and other trinkets from your adventures.
-
You can chat with various NPCs and familiar faces from the Borderlands franchise including Moxxi, Ellie, Marcus, and Tannis. Sir Hammerlock is also along for the ride and will collect any hunting trophies you bring back for him.
