Dark Souls 2: How To Defeat Mytha, The Baneful Queen

The Dark Souls series has a long tradition of challenging, interesting, and complex boss fights, and Dark Souls 2 is no different. From horrifying giant frogs to ancient kings gone mad over time, there are plenty of memorable encounters.

Mytha, the Baneful Queen is no different. A toxic monarch situated atop the Earthen Peaks, she will do her best to make sure you are poisoned at all points during the battle. However, if you follow some key tips, this fight can be made much more manageable.

Mytha, The Baneful Queen Overview

Mytha is a Medusa-like fight, where her main tactic is to poison you at all times. Compared to many of the enemies you will come across in Dark Souls 2, she is relatively simple. However, if you let the poison take hold, you are in trouble.

The Queen is located at the end of the Earthen Peaks, and her boss room is filled with poison that will constantly affect you. However, this poison can be mostly removed by exploring the Earthen Peaks.

Once the poison is removed her attacks are quite simple, slow and easy to avoid or block. She has a number of ranged moves that have very little tracking and thus can be rolled away from.

To completely trivialise this fight, one could use Pyromancy or summon the NPC located outside of the boss room.

Mytha, The Baneful Queen Attacks

Attack Description Counter
Head Throw Mytha will throw her decapitated head at you, causing an explosion. She will then move quickly to retrieve her head. This one is quite hard to dodge due to its wide range. The best solution is burning away the room’s poison so you can run far away from the attack.
Grab Attack This one hits hard. If you stand behind her she will use her tail to constrict you. Don't stand behind her for too long, as this will trigger the attack. If it is triggered, you can roll away from it.
Tail Swipe Using her tail she will swing at you. Simply roll through or block this one.
Spear Attacks Mytha has three spear attacks, a twirl, a thrust and a slash. Each are relatively slow and does not have much tracking. All of these attacks can be rolled through or blocked.
Magic Stream Occurs at least once in every encounter, usually at the start of a fight, she will shoot a long beam of magic from her head. This can be dodged by running straight to the left of the attack.

How To Remove The Poison

The main thing you will want to do before even starting this fight is to remove the poison in the boss room.

To do so you must first defeat the Covetous Demon, then from the bonfire continue on until you see a switch on the wall and pull it.

Keep moving along the walkways, facing some tough enemies. Eventually, you will come to the outside of the windmill, here you can use a torch to set it alight.

This step is crucial, and will make the boss fight exponentially easier.

Strategy

There are two approaches here: using a poise/strike weapon or using Pyromancy.

Having cleared the poison from the room, you will have lots of room to maneuver. Her attacks are slow, and can be blocked or easily rolled through.

Using a strike-type damage weapon will allow you to deal huge damage to her, very quickly. Importantly, you must avoid her grab attack as this where she hurts the most.

Conversely, Mytha is amazingly weak to fire damage. Using Pyromancy essentially trivialises this fight. It can be made even more simple by summoning the NPC found outside of the boss room, Jester Thomas. He uses Pyromancy, and therefore decimates Mytha with ease.

Key Tips

  • Clear away the poison.
  • Don't stand behind her.
  • Use Pyromancy.
  • Summon Jester Thomas.
