Dead Space spiritual sequel The Callisto Protocol aims to be scariest game ever

One of the big surprises of The Game Awards is a new game by the co-creator of Dead Space, that aims to be the next gen of survival horror.

There weren’t too many surprises at this year’s Game Awards, which isn’t unexpected given what a number the coronavirus has done to most company’s plans this year.

One game that came out of nowhere though was The Callisto Protocol, the first project from new studio Striking Distance Games, which is owned by PUBG publisher Krafton and is run by Glen Schofield, co-creator of Dead Space.

Until recently Schofield, along with fellow co-creator Michael Condrey, worked at Activision on Call Of Duty, but now that he’s left he’s set to work on what he hopes will be the ‘scariest game ever’.

We’re not 100% clear on what’s going on in the trailer but it looks like some Umbrella-esque shenanigans are going on at a prison on Callisto, the second largest moon of Jupiter.

It looks like prisoners are being tested on and turned into some kind of zombie/alien type monster, while robot guards look on.

Schofield describes the game as a ‘next generation take on survival horror’ and a single-player, third person story-driven horror game.

It’s seven years since the last Dead Space game, with final entry Dead Space 3 being accused of watering down the horror elements and adding an unwanted co-op mode.

The Callisto Protocol seems to be dead set on avoiding the same mistakes and is scheduled for released in 2022 on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
