Fortnite: What’s New This Season
Fortnite has just entered Chapter Three. The first season is named Flipped, because the island has actually been turned upside down. This didn't just give us a new map, though, but a ton of new content as well. There are tons of new mechanics and features to discover. You can even recreate the Spider-Man pointing meme in-game.
There will be new surprises down the road. It seems that the island is still thawing and you will be able to discover more of it later on in the season. It's speculated that one of these surprises might be the one and only Tilted Towers. Fans have found some structures under the ice that are strangely similar when it comes to shape and placement. Even if more is still coming, there's plenty to discover for the time being. Here's what's new about Fortnite in Chapter Three Season One.
SPOILERS AHEAD: If you're not a fan of spoilers, be warned, as this article includes images and details of the newest features and mechanics in the game.
Perhaps the most significant change — and definitely the change you'll notice as soon as you enter your first match of the Season — is the completely undiscovered, greyed-out map.
You will have to visit each landmark and point of interest for them to appear on your map with their names displayed. This is what the map will look like once all of its areas have been discovered:
It's a very diverse map — there are some tropical and exotic zones, dry deserts, and some bone-chilling snowy areas. Epic's Season overview blog post makes it seem as though the ice will melt throughout the Season and the large snow-white areas will soon start to change, giving these parts of the map a different color as the grasslands become more evident.
Swinging and Sliding
Being able to slide just makes it ten times cooler to move around in a video game. Thankfully, Epic Games have added this mechanic to Fortnite. You can now evade enemy fire and dodge bullets by sliding from one place to another. This also makes traveling downhill faster. It's a blast!
If you haven't figured out how to do it yet, check out our guide on how to slide in Fortnite. And, speaking of being close to the ground, if you're knocked out by an enemy you can pick up items as you crawl around.
Since Spidey is a major part of the Battle Pass this Season, you will now also be able to swing from one place to another on December 11. You just have to find the Spider-Man's Web-Shooters item and you're set. And, don't worry, you can use the item even if you don't own the Spider-Man skin.
Spider-Man's Web-Shooters were accidentally put in the game early so some players have already tried them out, and it looks as good as it sounds. Although they're not in the game yet, you can already spot some giant spiderwebs around the island. Try jumping on them for a nice boost.
Tents are now a thing in Fortnite and they're actually quite useful. You can use them to manage your items and you can even use them as a hiding spot.
The item management mechanic comes in handy if you're making a base in a specific location or would simply like to stash some items for later. Stashing them in your tent makes the game automatically save them for later, which means you can get them later on in the same match or in another match.
There are two free spots to stash items, and if you want more, you can rent a third slot with gold bars. You can access them in any tent — it doesn't have to be the same tent. That's just how video-game magic works. If you're in a rush, you can pack up a tent and take it with you.
To keep the game fresh, Epic Games have decided to take out the old and give us some sweet new weapons. There are seven weapons to enjoy:
- Ranger Assault Rifle
- MK-Seven Assault Rifle
- Striker Pump Shotgun
- Auto Shotgun
- Sidearm Pistol
- Stinger SMG
- Hunter Bolt-Action Sniper
Try them out and decide which ones you like the most. With weekly updates, new weapons will be likely added throughout the Season, and some will be vaulted.
You can earn a Victory Crown if you place high enough in the previous match or take down a player wearing one. Wearing a Victory Crown will grant you extra XP throughout the match but it'll also show up on other players' minimap, making you a target. And, most importantly, you'll get a special emote if you win a game wearing a Victory Crown. The emote then displays how many times you've managed to accomplish this great feat — a Crowned Victory Royale.
In Solos, you have to be in the Top 4 to earn a Victory Crown for the next game. In Duos, your team has to place Top 2. In Trios and Squad, your team has to win the game.
