GoldenEye 007 Is Coming To Switch Online And Xbox Game Pass January 27
After months of waiting, Nintendo Switch owners will finally get a chance to replay a piece of gaming history on Friday when GoldenEye 007 comes to Xbox Game Pass and Switch Expansion Pass owners.
Announced at last September's Direct, GoldenEye 007 had long been rumored for a re-release. One of N64's best-selling titles and a game that defined console shooters for generations, developer Rare had been trying to bring GoldenEye back for years, but licensing issues with the notoriously strict Bond IP made it impossible.
Until last year, when Rare and Nintendo confirmed that GoldenEye 007 would be re-releases on both Xbox Game Pass and the Switch. We didn't know it would release on these platforms as we were only told it would be "coming soon," but today, the two companies have confirmed the Bond returns on Friday, January 27.
There are some key differences between the two versions of the game, however. While the Game Pass version gets 4K resolutions, achievements, and split-screen multiplayer, it won't have online multiplayer. That'll be reserved for the Nintendo Switch version, which will allow up to four players to connect to multiplayer lobbies for some good, old-fashioned slappers-only no Oddjob mayhem.
The good news about GoldenEye 007's re-release is that you won't have to worry about stepping on an N64 since this game is all-digital. It was apparently a concern of Nintendo that players might accidentally crush their first 64-bit consoles back in the day, as exemplified by an ancient manual for the Pikachu N64. The diagram told Japanese players to not attempt to mash finnicky cartridges into the console by stepping on them lest it shatter the console into tiny pieces. Sorry to burst your bubble if you thought Nintendo made consoles tough enough for a child to step on.
