Jessica Henwick Turned Down Role Of Xialing In Shang-Chi So Colleen Could Join The MCU
Spoiler warning for Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye Episode six
Fans of the Netflix MCU shows have been eating good this week. First, we had a surprise Matt Murdock appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, re-confirming that the series does actually take place in the same universe as the films. Then, to top it all off, we had the triumphant return of the terrifying Kingpin in the Hawkeye finale, who hopefully isn't actually dead, otherwise I will riot.
Now, we have another actor throwing their hat into the ring, and willing to sacrifice a lot to make it happen. Jessica Henwick, who played Colleen Wing in Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders, has revealed that she turned down a different role in the MCU, because it would have destroyed the possibility of her Netflix character making a return.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Henwick says she was considered for the role of Xialing in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, she instead opted to join the cast of The Matrix: Resurrections, as she wasn't quite ready to say goodbye to her first MCU role.
"If I did [Shang-Chi], I would effectively be putting Colleen to bed. It wasn’t the main factor, but it definitely came up in conversation", says Henwick. "I love Colleen. She changed my life. Of course, if I was given the opportunity to revisit her, I would."
Sadly, the actress – also known for her appearance in Game of Thrones – doesn't sound too confident that Colleen will return anytime soon. She reveals that she knew about Daredevil's return years in advance, but has not heard anything about her own MCU film debut.
"I just don’t know how likely that is. Charlie [Cox] knew about that opportunity years ago. He already knew it was happening. I think I would have heard by now if there were any plans with Colleen." And of course, if they were looking to get Henwick playing a totally different character, that's a pretty big indication that there are no plans for Colleen.
While that pretty much unconfirms Henwick from any MCU content next year, we can see her in The Matrix, which is in cinemas now.
