MTG: The Planeswalkers Of Commander Legends: Battle For Baldur’s Gate, Ranked

Magic: The Gathering's newest set, Commander Legends: Battle For Baldur’s Gate is the game's newest crossover with Dungeons & Dragons, introducing a wide range of new made-for-Commander cards to the game. As is the case with nearly every new Magic set, Battle For Baldur’s Gate introduces several new powerful planeswalkers to the game.

Though planeswalkers can't be used as a deck's commander unless specified, Battle For Baldur’s Gate is designed around the Commander format, and so each of these new planeswalkers are viable commanders. Here are the planeswalkers of Battle for Baldur's Gate.

3 Elminster

An Azorius (white/blue) planeswalker for five mana, Elminster enters the battlefield with five loyalty, toting a triggered ability, a +2 ability, and a -3 ability, each of which synergize with each other in an impressive fashion. Whenever Elminster's controller scries, the next instant or sorcery its controller would cast that turn costs X mana less to cast, where X is the number of cards viewed while scrying.

While this is already a solid effect that players can build around, Elminster is capable of enabling this cost reduction itself, as the card's +2 ability allows its controller to draw a card and then scry two. In addition to providing cost reduction for its controller's spells, this cost reduction also synergizes with Eminster's -3 ability.

When Elminster's -3 is used, its controller exiles the top card of their library, and then creates a number of flying 1/1 Faerie Dragon tokens equal to the exiled card's mana value. Thanks to the scrying of Elminster's +2, its controller can ensure that the top card of their library has a substantial mana value to ensure a large enough number of tokens are created through this effect.

2 Tasha, The Witch Queen

Another five-mana planeswalker, Tasha, the Witch Queen is a great Dimir (blue/black) card that not only allows its controller to cast their opponent's spells, but it rewards them for doing so. With a triggered ability, a +1 ability, and a -3 ability, Tasha's triggered ability creates a 3/3 black demon token whenever its controller casts a spell that they don't own. While this effect can definitely be built around and paired with other strong spell-stealing cards like Xanathar, Guild Kingpin, Tasha herself is capable of enabling this effect.

When Tasha's +1 is used, Tasha's controller draws a card. Then, Tasha's controller may exile up to one instant or sorcery from each opponent's graveyard with a page counter on it. Once there are sufficient spells in exile with page counters on them, Tasha's -3 can be used to allow its controller to cast one of these exiled spells without paying its mana cost, simultaneously creating a demon token thanks to Tasha's triggered ability.

For those looking to construct a deck around the ability to use one's opponents' own spells against them, Tasha is a great commander option. Additionally, as Tasha can be rather self-sufficient while making use of the cards in an opponent's graveyard, she can be a wonderful addition to any Dimir mill deck that is dumping their opponents' spells into the graveyard.

1 Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes

The second appearance of the character of Minsc in Magic: The Gathering, following his inclusion as a legendary creature in Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. This time, Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes are a stellar new Gruul (red/green) planewalker that can offer incredible value as either a commander or an asset within the 99 of a deck. A three-loyalty planeswalker for four mana, Minsc & Boo sport a triggered ability, a +1 ability, and a -2 ability.

When this planeswalker enters the battlefield, or at the beginning of each of its controller's upkeeps, that player creates Boo, a legendary 1/1 red Hamster creature token with trample and haste. Not only does this provide consistent access to an adorable creature with relevant keywords, this planeswalker can utilize it in various ways.

Firstly, this card's +1 ability can be used to put an impressive three +1/+1 counters on a creature, as long as it has trample and/or haste. As Boo has access to both of these abilities, it is a viable candidate and so it can hypothetically wind up as a 4/4 the same turn this planeswlaker is cast.

In addition to being able to increase the size of one's creatures, Minsc & Boo's -2 ability allows its controller to sacrifice a creature, dealing damage equal to its power to any target. While this is a solid sacrifice outlet, if a Hamster is sacrificed this way, its controller also draws a number of cards equal to its power.

This means that after stacking counters on Boo, not only can it be utilized as either direct damage to an opponent or as removal, it can also be an excellent source of card advantage over the course of a game.

Through Minsc & Boo's combination of offensive prowess, ability to remove opponents' creatures, and card draw potential, it serves as an incredible and flexible planeswalker capable of generating impressive value for its controller.
