Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super Review: Better than the original for the exact same price
NVIDIA claims that the RTX 2060 SUPER is almost comparable to the performance of the original RTX 2070, and with the 2060 SUPER being marketed at £379, you get – on average – 16% more power for £100 more. At that point, it’s up to the buyers preference but the 2070 SUPER is one hell of a graphics card for mid-level budget gaming.
If you aren’t willing to sacrifice quality for performance, but you don’t have enough money for a high-end RTX card, then the 2070 SUPER is definitely a fantastic option for not only getting started with the world of raytracing but gaming in general.
For gaming at 1080p with raytracing enabled, NVIDIA has provided a performance comparison for multiple raytracing supported titles.
I cannot personally think of many faults to the card, but there is quite an underlying issue in regards to temperature. Using the founders edition reference card, which has a unique 2 fan cooling design, it seems that the 2070 SUPER gets hot quite easily. This isn’t just a problem with the specific card, however, as this same cooling design can be found across all of NVIDIA’s flagship RTX video cards.
For simple to mid-level tasks, I still find the 2070 SUPER getting vastly hot to the point where touching the card even a while after shutting down the computer would hurt from its temperature. It’s not that much of a problem as most of the time the card is inside the computer and not in my hands but it is something to consider as you may need to look into other cooling solutions if you want to keep your GPU cool.
On startup, the fans on the card are rather loud for a brief period of time, but in general usage I find the acoustics of the fans to be noticeable but not loud or annoying. If you dislike noise, it might be more of an issue.
In conclusion, the RTX 2070 SUPER is probably one of the best gaming graphics cards on the planet if you don’t want to sacrifice quality for performance, and while I criticized the RTX 2080Ti for its price, the £479 tag for this card is expensive but reasonable at the same time. It still baffles me that this card is up to 24% faster than the RTX 2070 for the exact same price.
