Old School RuneScape Adds Soul Wars Minigame During 20th Anniversary Event
Old School RuneScape has only been around since 2013, but it’s still getting in on its elder sibling’s 20th anniversary festivities. Starting today, you’ll now be able to try your hand at a brand-new minigame called Soul Wars.
“Mysterious portals have opened in Edgeville and Ferox Enclave,” reads the official announcement from Jagex. “Those brave enough to venture through will find themselves on the Isle of Souls, where they’ll get the opportunity to play Soul Wars – a new, members-only minigame involving fierce combat and territory control.” Best of all, there’s no need to worry about losing your gear, as Soul Wars is a safe minigame for all who participate.
Once you’ve gone through the tutorial, you’ll be able to enter an official Soul Wars match. The goal is simple – eliminate the opposing team’s Avatar as many times as you can before the timer hits zero. A match will typically run for 15 minutes, but can end early if either time pulls of five Avatar eliminations. Along the way you can capture Soul Obelisks to reduce the enemy Avatar’s power, sacrifice Soul Fragments from defeated opponents to damage their Avatar, and destroy various barricades to create new routes of access.
It all sounds like a great addition to the OSRS minigame roster, and a fun way to celebrate RuneScape’s 20th anniversary. There are plenty of great rewards to be had as well, such as the exclusive Soul Cape and Avatar Pet – check out the full patch notes for details.
Beyond the Soul Wars minigame, you’ll find various other anniversary events running in Old School RuneScape. There’s a massive quest involving a “loquacious Gnome Child,” the end of Leagues 2 – along with its rewards – and plenty of new merch in the RuneScape store. Over in the other RuneScape, players are being treated to new activities every week through January – just head over to the Lumbridge Crater to join in. 2021 is shaping up to be another great year for RuneScape, and we’re curious to see what the team has planned next.
