PS5 more powerful than Project Scarlett claims insider source
A developer claiming to have used the devkits for the PS5 and next gen Xbox says that Sony’s console is the fastest at the moment.
From the moment it was announced, Microsoft never made any claim that the original version of the Xbox One was more powerful than the PlayStation 4 – just one of many serious mistakes made during the console’s unveiling.
They eventually rectified that with the Xbox One X, which is currently the most powerful console in the world. You’d imagine they’d do everything to ensure Project Scarlett was the same, but a new report suggest that Sony’s format has the advantage.
A developer using the name Kleegamefan on forum ResetEra made the claim with the caveat that they’d only see the devkits (the hardware used to create games that is similar to, but not identical, to the retail versions – the same thing that website LetsGoDigital keeps creating speculative renders of) and that the PlayStation 5 is in a more ‘advanced state’.
They suggest that software updates from Microsoft could narrow the gap but that in terms of raw hardware the PlayStation 5 seems to be more powerful.
‘Right now, game performance is better on PS5. I believe that is probably because PS5 development hardware and software are in a more advanced state. I fully expect Scarlett to close that gap once they ship more mature dev kits and software’, said Kleegamefan.
‘It must be said, since software, not hardware, is a traditional Microsoft area of expertise, it’s very possible that they could ultimately deliver more advanced DirectX development software in the end, allowing games to run better on Scarlett even if the hardware is less capable, they added.
‘I don’t know this to be the case, but the possibility can’t be discounted’.
Sony has only released fairly vague tech specs for the PlayStation 5 and Microsoft not even that, so in terms of official information there’s nothing to go on.
With a year to go till launch, even Kleegamefan admits things could easily change and devkits do often get updated in terms of both hardware and software.
But at the moment, despite Microsoft being a much larger and richer company, it sounds like at the very least the gap between the two machines is surprisingly small.
