Rare Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson University of Miami Football Card Sells for $14K USD

It comes as no surprise that the pandemic has driven the card market to boom. However, it might be unexpected to hear that The Rock has made a comeback to the football world, only this time in the form of a rare trading card. Dwayne The Rock Johnson‘s University of Miami football card was given a Gem Mint 10 grading by PSA and sold for $13,988 USD by PWCC Auctions.

A similar version of this ultra-rare card appeared on the market in 2014, and was sold for $4,228 USD. The most recent card’s value has since skyrocketed as it sold for nearly $10,000 USD more. The tuna company, Bumble Bee, produced 24-card sheets featuring the top football players of the University of Miami in 1994. Johnson was accompanied by future NFL stars including Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp in that particular set of cards. The card sheets were supposedly given out at a game held at the Orange Bowl during the 1994 season. But, due to the rainy weather, attendees reportedly did not bother saving the rain-soaked cards. Consequently, less than 50 Dwayne Johnson football cards are expected to exist today.

Although short-lived in comparison to his WWE and Hollywood career, The Rock was a promising defensive tackle who was part of the University of Miami’s 1991 national championship team. With The Rock‘s growing popularity, the rarity of the card, and the added bonus of near-perfect condition memorabilia, the card’s price was an unanticipated surprise.
