Riot Games Receives Ransom Email After Being Hacked

Riot Games was hacked last week. The California-based developer admitted that the hack "temporarily affected our ability to release content" and would "impact our upcoming patch cadence across multiple games," including Teamfight Tactics and League of Legends’ upcoming 13.2 update.

Today, we find out just how much damage these hackers wrought. In a statement on Twitter, Riot confirmed that the hackers made off with source code for both League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics, and it has received a ransom letter threatening to release this code online unless the developer pays up.

"Over the weekend, our analysis confirmed source code for League, [Teamfight Tactics], and a legacy anti-cheat platform were exfiltrated by the attackers," wrote Riot Games. "Today, we received a ransom email. Needless to say, we won’t pay.

"While this attack disrupted our build environment and could cause issues in the future, most importantly we remain confident that no player data or player personal information was compromised."

Riot's biggest concern seems to be "new cheats emerging" as a result of the source code leak. The developer said it's still assessing the impact this could have against League's current anti-cheat suite and will deploy fixes "if needed."

Another concern for Riot is experimental game modes and features that were stolen along with the source code. Riot made it clear in its statement that although these features and game modes might appear online if the hackers release this source code, "there’s no guarantee it will ever be released" in-game.

Riot is working with law enforcement as well as external consultants to investigate the hack and possibly reveal the alleged hackers. We'll be sure to keep an eye out for that leaked source code if it ever does show up on the dark web.
