Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5 gets new 60fps ray-tracing mode

A new patch for Spider-Man: Miles Morales on the PS5 has added a Performance RT mode to the game that offers the best of both worlds.

One of the minor disappointments of the next gen console launch is that most games have included two or more graphical modes, usually forcing you to choose between either smooth frame rates or higher resolutions.

It’s a little dispiriting to know your brand-new console can’t handle everything at once, except now Spider-Man: Miles Morales can, thanks to get a new third option called Performance RT.

It’s still a compromise, but much less so than the existing two options, as you can now play the game with ray-tracing effects and still have it run at 60 frames per second.

Previously the only way to run the game at 60fps was to turn ray-tracing off, with the other ‘Fidelity mode’ forcing the game to run at 30fps with ray-tracing.

In order to make this possible Performance RT mode reduces the density of crowds, the quality of the ray-tracing reflections, and by ‘adjusting the scene resolution’ – which likely means it decreases when things are getting busy.

It seems likely that the remaster of the original Spider-Man game will get the same option, although at the moment it’s still stuck with just the original two modes.

What’s interesting about this, apart from making Spider-Man even better, is that it suggests it might become a common option in future games.

As developers become more familiar with the next gen systems they’ll be able to squeeze more and more power out of them as they years go by, and it’s encouraging to know that Insomniac are already pushing the PlayStation 5 more now compared to when the game was finished for launch.
