Super Mario Maker 2 Nintendo Direct reveals new Super Mario 3D World features
The latest game-specific Nintendo Direct has focused on Nintendo’s 2D game creator and the new Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers.
In what may be the last Nintendo Direct before E3, the spotlight has been placed on Super Mario Maker 2 and its mountain of new features.
The original game was released on Wii U and 3DS and allowed you to create your own 2D Super Mario Bros. courses using a surprisingly powerful level editor.
The sequel is the same idea with many more options, including just about every enemy or gadget from the existing games, including the angry sun, on/off switches, vertical courses, slopes, and more.
The whole Direct only lasts 17 minutes but it’s well worth a watch, especially if you’re not convinced the game is for you.
As before, you can create your levels in the style of one of four games: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U.
However, there’ll also be the addition of Super Mario 3D World features such as the Cat Mario suit and blinking blocks. Which is great and all, but everything still plays out strictly in 2D, rather than the 2.5D or isometric look of the original game.
That aside everything else did sound great, especially the new biomes and a night mode that changes the nature of levels and enemies, such as turning water to poison and reversing gravity.
If you don’t fancy making anything yourself though there’s a story mode featuring more than 100 levels created by Nintendo and new music by the legendary Koji Kondo.
You can also download levels made by other players and play competitively or co-operatively either online or locally.
Super Mario Maker 2 is out on 28 June but the Direct ends with the annoucement of Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers, which is something only Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can buy but allows you to get two games for just £84, saving you around £35.
This includes pre-orders and while the vouchers have to be bought in pairs they don’t have to be spent at the same time. It seems a pretty good deal and you can see a list of available games here.
