A brand new Witcher game has just been announced but hold your expectations in check as it’s a location-based mobile game.

So far, we’ve had Pokémon Go clones based on everything from Harry Potter to The Walking Dead, but we never thought we’d see one inspired by The Witcher.

It’s being made by Spokko, one of CD Projekt’s smaller studios, with a promise of ‘console-grade visuals’, so it’s not just a quick cash-in for the Netflix series.

As with all similar games, Monster Slayer will be free-to-play and use augmented reality to make it look like the creatures are hanging around your local park or wherever you choose to hunt them.

The game does have proper story elements and will act as a prequel to The Witcher series, back when monster slaying was in high demand.

As in The Witcher 3 you’ll have to study up on the creatures and learn to track them before you have a chance of fighting them, taking account of the (real) time of day and weather as you do.

You’ll also need to get ready by crafting potions, oils, weapons, and bait – which all sounds interestingly involved.

The app is due to be released on both iOS and Android later this year, although there’s no specific release date yet.
