Tumblr Mocks Twitter By Offering Double Verification That Might Turn Into Crabs

Twitter is burning to the ground as we all stand and watch, and what might be the biggest unintentional effort to fan those flames has been letting users buy blue checkmarks. A wild change to Twitter's status quo that Tumblr has decided to openly mock and capitalize on.

Allowing anyone to get verified for $8 per month has resulted in people paying to masquerade as celebrities and corporations. Something that has likely resulted in the few advertisers who were sticking around to see how this played out running for the hills. Suffice to say, now is the perfect time for an existing platform to try and win back users who might have left it behind.

Tumblr is attempting to do that by poking fun at Twitter while making a little money in the process, and it appears to be working. The platform has implemented a system in which users can buy not just one, but two blue checkmarks to attach to their account. Even better, the cost of Tumblr verification is $7.99 per month, a whole penny less than it is on Twitter, and again, you will be twice as verified as you would be under Elon Musk's watch for that price.

Tumblr describes its two checkmarks as a “coveted status symbol”, boasting that there isn't even any need to be verified by its staff before that symbol is applied. This isn't just a joke either. You really can pay $7.99 per month for the two ticks. Best of all, if you're willing to part with the cash, you can seemingly do it as many times as you like. Some users have already been flaunting as many as ten blue checkmarks.

There is one big risk Tumblr mentions in the fine print. “The Important Blue Checkmark may turn into a bunch of crabs at any time.” If anything, that has probably made some people want the two checkmarks more. Meanwhile, over on Twitter, Musk appears to be unblocking himself from everyone's accounts so he can try and convince as many people as possible to give him $8 per month.
