US And Soviet Forces Meet Again In The ‘What If’ Scenarios Of Combat Mission Cold War
Video game developer Battlefront and publisher Slitherine Ltd have battle buddied together to create the next mid-20th century wargame in the extensive Combat Mission series, Combat Mission Cold War. The game’s Steam page is now live, and has the game’s planned release date listed as ‘coming soon’.
More information on Combat Mission Cold War (CMCW) has been added to the Battlefront website, with the game listed at $60 (pre-orders now being taken), putting it on par with the two most previous Combat Mission games, Shock Force 2 and Black Sea. If you’re looking for the original games in the series, head over to GOG where you can buy Beyond Overlord, Barbarossa to Berlin, and Afrika Korps for just $5.99 each.
CMCW is based on the 45-year Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, and is set specifically between the years 1979-1982. As a whole, the series focuses on when NATO and the Soviet Warsaw Pact military forces were transitioning from the doctrines of early 20th century industrialized warfare into what is now known as the digital battlefield. Definitively, the dev state CMCW “simulates several ‘what if’ conflict scenarios between US and Soviet forces centered on the strategic Fulda Gap and environs in West Germany.”
CMCW also toys a bit with some alterative history as you’ll be able to run such ‘what if’ scenarios as having US M60A3 Main Battle Tanks (which entered service in 1960) square off in battle against Soviet T-80 MBT’s (which were not designed until 1976). But more than just pitting weapons of war from different eras against each other, you’ll be able to conduct wargame ‘what if’ contests in regards to military doctrine, in a scenario with the modern AirLand Battle doctrine versus Vietnam era doctrine.
CMCW will have three campaigns available featuring the National Training Center (NTC) Campaign, the US West German Campaign, and the Soviet Campaign. You can check the Highlights section of the announcement post for a few details on the table of organization and equipment that’ll be available in-game. You can also recon the Battlefront and Slitherine main battle websites for more info on Combat Mission Cold War as it’s published.
