Xbox Series S can't run Xbox One X content suggests tech analysis

It’s claimed the lack of memory on the Xbox Series S means it won’t be able to run Xbox One X enhanced games, breaking Microsoft’s chain of backwards compatibility.

The reveal of Xbox Series S has, justifiably, seen a major increase in Microsoft’s next gen credibility but while it’s already known to have many compromises, in order to sell for just £250, there may be one additional issue that Microsoft hasn’t mentioned yet.

An analysis video by Digital Foundry points out that the Xbox Series S only has 10GB of RAM, which is less than the 12GB of the Xbox One X.

That likely means that it won’t be able to run the Xbox One X version of backwards compatible games but will instead have to default to the Xbox One S edition, losing all the enhancements of the superior version.

Microsoft has not confirmed this, but Digital Foundry consider it a ‘forgone conclusion’ given the memory differences.

Xbox One X games often offer high resolution, colour detail, and texture filtering when running games, as well as improved frame rate performance – including for Xbox 360 titles.

So unless Microsoft creates a completely separate backwards compatibility system just for Xbox Series S it won’t be able to run Xbox One games as well as the Xbox One X (except maybe when it comes to load times).

The Xbox Series S has the same CPU as the much more expensive Xbox Series X, but less memory and a less powerful GPU. It still supports ray-tracing and up to 120fps frame rates though, just not native 4K.
