Here’s How Zelda: Breath of the Wild Works in VR
Following the reveal that Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be getting Nintendo Labo VR support, Nintendo has detailed exactly how BOTW will work when the free VR update arrives on April 26, 2019.
Breath of the Wild’s technical director Takuhiro Dohta posted a blog post that details exactly what fans can expect when they put their Nintendo Switch into the Labo Toy-Con VR googles and jump into our game of the year for 2017.
Once players update BOTW on April 26, all they will need to do is open the menu, select System, select Options, and then toggle the Toy-Con VR Goggles option to on. Then, when they place their Switch in to their VR Googles with the Joy-Con controllers connected to the side, the entirety of Hyrule and BOTW will be available to them in VR.
As a note, motion controls an be turned off as needed.
Controls will be identical to the standard game, but as players move their head around the in-game camera will move with them. Nintendo recommends using the VR Goggles when “there’s something interesting to see, like a location with a great view, a favourite character, or a favourite piece of equipment.”
Nintendo hopes this will “add a little twist to the world of Hyrule” and will give players a reason to jump back into the game that we gave a perfect 10 when it released two years ago. Also, it will work with existing save data, so players will not need to start a new file to experience this new mode.
The idea for Breath of the Wild in VR started right when the Nintendo Labo development team gave the BOTW team a demo of the VR Goggles.
Dohta and his team thought a lot about how to incorporate VR, and they came to the conclusion that rather than show off a particular section or boss fight, they would let players play as they see fit and see whatever parts they so desire.
During the development of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the development team’s goal was to make it a “multiplicative gameplay” experience, in which “players could find their own fun and find their own ways to play.” With VR support, Nintendo is hoping “the fun can multiply again!”
Breath of the Wild, as well as Super Mario Odyssey with its new “bite-sized bonus experiences,” will get VR support on April 26. Until then, be sure to check out our review of the Nintendo Labo VR Kit, where we said that while “it won’t stack up to high-end VR headsets, Nintendo’s Labo VR Kit is a surprisingly solid and in-depth introduction to the world of VR.
