Riot’s letting other studios make League of Legends games
Riot Games will release new games that are part of the League of Legends universe but created by third-party developers under a new label called Riot Forge.
Riot Forge will publish single-player games that expand the League of Legends lore “in different genres on various platforms,” with the help of other game developers. Riot itself is moving beyond the core League of Legends game experience with card game Legends of Runeterra, a fighting game, and a role-playing game, but it sounds like Riot Forge will push the League brand even further.
“We are always looking for new ways to bring the World of Runeterra and its champions to new and existing audiences around the world,” said Greg Street, vice president of IP and Entertainment at Riot Games in a press release. “There are so many talented game studios around the world that have exceptional experience and craft skills in all areas of game development, and we are really excited to work together to bring the LoL IP to new game experiences.”
The announcement did not include any specific titles or dates to look forward to, but did state that “multiple titles” were in development. There was also no confirmation about which developers will be working with Riot Forge, though that information will likely come in the future, along with game announcements. The first game will be announced at The Game Awards on Dec. 12, according to producer and host Geoff Keighley.
